TBG & JMT

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is an architecture and engineering firm that has grown from planning and building primarily private projects on the east coast to providing a full range of multi-disciplinary services to a range of private clients and public agencies throughout the U.S. This diversification resulted in the organization’s site no longer serving the firm; it wasn’t focused enough on users, and it didn’t make much of a brand impression.

In addition, the site had grown stale, with content unchanging for long periods of time. And an old content management system (CMS) made it difficult for JMT staff to update the site with content reflecting its larger, more recent projects reflective of the firm’s national reach and impressive stature in the market.

TBG (The Berndt Group) partnered with JMT to redesign the site with the following goals:

  • properly position JMT as a national firm capable of and with experience completing a wide variety of projects throughout the country;
  • attract high-quality employees—key to JMT’s success;
  • close new clients and projects with a new website—which should be the firm’s richest and most multi-purpose marketing collateral; and
  • enable better content publishing processes.

Prospective clients doing their due diligence by looking at the site today can now easily and immediately see the depth of JMT’s experience—in the transportation, energy, building, water and utilities, and IT infrastructure markets—as well as the breadth of professional services offered in each market. The content chosen deftly signals to clients JMT’s ability to get large jobs done, and to prospective employees that JMT is a great place to work.

TBG completely re-architected both the site’s user experience and its back-end content publishing process, resulting in a hugely successful marketing effort. We enjoyed being the ones to wear the hardhat this time!

"Designing and implementing our new web site was of strategic importance to JMT's leadership. We wanted our web presence to reflect our growth to date and be an instrument to support our growth in the future. We knew we needed the assistance of a renowned, tech-savvy, creative, efficient and responsive Web Development firm. We chose The Berndt Group after significant research and we are very pleased with their leadership, project management, creative contributions and the end result."

Project Galleries

Project Galleries

JMT has amazing photos—including aerial shots sometimes necessary for very large projects—but they weren’t being used to their full advantage. Some weren’t being used at all, because the old CMS made updates tricky. TBG used jQuery image galleries to show off JMT’s high quality imagery. JMT content editors are able to re-combine existing gallery slides into new, separate galleries when a new market or solution section is built. The new JMT site not only effectively and beautifully showcases JMT’s project portfolio, but JMT staff can create new galleries as needed.

Filtered Project Portfolio Search

Filtered Project Portfolio Search

Prospective clients doing due diligence ahead of entering into high dollar engagements needed to be able to quickly see projects in multiple market segments and across services offered. If the results didn’t show quickly, the firm would risk looking like a bit player—either by not having representative projects to show, or by having lagging technology. The Project Portfolio uses AJAX to allow fast cross-filtering of multiple levels of Markets and Services sections. The metadata taxonomy—a way of relating two or more types of data or content behind the scenes—drives project filtering and associating projects with Solution areas. The filtered search is lightning fast, since results load on the page as soon as the user makes their selection. The filtered search enables clients to quickly gauge JMT’s expertise.

CMS Implementation

CMS Implementation

JMT’s old site was running on a CMS that no longer supported its needs. Staff couldn’t update as often as they needed to, and the site didn’t offer much flexibility in terms of adding new sections. TBG implemented Umbraco, an Open Source CMS. Umbraco makes it possible to easily reuse the same content in multiple places, to automate related links (important for conversion), and to better manage user workflow. The new JMT site is a winning combination of standardization using Umbraco CMS and flexibility using the workflow TBG implemented. With the additional ability to recombine image galleries into new product content, TBG has provided JMT with an enormous amount of flexibility they can use for years to come.
