Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP

Long-standing Partnership with a Storied Baltimore Law Firm

Communicating the Brand

Communicating the Brand

Gallagher has a long history as a very stable, best in class firm—with a social conscience. The new site had to reinforce the confidence of the firm with existing clients, inspire clients to refer new business, and persuade prospective clients to consider the firm’s services. A new design would have to match the sophistication that Gallagher is known for. The existing site was underusing Gallagher’s two most valuable assets in communicating its unique, storied brand: its rich history and its team of people. TBG worked with Gallagher to bring into focus messaging about the firm’s grounding in and commitment to the Baltimore community, starting with social justice issues in the 1960s and continuing through today’s revitalization projects and wealth of pro bono and reduced fee services for social issues.

Making the Most of Sitecore CMS

Making the Most of Sitecore CMS

TBG’s implementation of Sitecore represents a watershed moment in Gallagher’s marketing and presentation, bringing its image into alignment with its reality as a large, sophisticated firm operating in Baltimore. TBG first introduced Gallagher to the practical efficiency of CMS years ago with a previous engagement that saw us implement an early custom solution. When Gallagher outgrew that product, TBG was on deck with Sitecore, an extremely robust, best-of-breed, asp.NET CMS. Sitecore’s method of allowing site owners to create and manage content in an efficient way that saves them time and money isn’t unique in the world of CMS, but Sitecore is engineered far better than most.

Usability & Content Improvements

Usability & Content Improvements

TBG recommended subtle and not-so-subtle improvements to navigation, content, and site structure to enable the site’s average users to find what they were looking for—regardless if they knew what they were looking for.TBG recommended a strategy of improving site usability by developing and implementing topical content to reinforce messaging; redesigning site navigation so users know where they are and what content is available; and rewriting content to make it more readable and accessible by the average site user. The homepage now better reflects Gallagher’s activities as a firm by featuring topical, targeted content chosen based on how it positions and reinforces key Gallagher messaging, rather than just for the sake of freshness.

TBG & Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP

Gallagher Evelius & Jones LLP is a Baltimore law firm with a rich history. Founded in 1961, the firm was devoted to community service and activism from the start. Early manager and co-founder Frank Gallagher worked to reverse the decay of downtown Baltimore’s business district and set the stage for an urban renaissance in the 1960s and 1970s by helping to form the Greater Baltimore Committee (GBC). Frank Gallagher was also a leader in desegregating public schools in Baltimore following Brown v. Board of Education, and he worked as a state legislator to fight housing and employment discrimination.

The firm’s values instilled in the early years still persist. Today, Gallagher, comprising more than 40 attorneys, is the lawyer and trusted advisor to many of the largest real estate developers and institutions in Maryland, including the Catholic Church. In addition, Gallagher is known not only as a champion for social justice and for Baltimore itself, but also for its unusually cooperative culture. Attorneys of different Gallagher practices collaborate, creating a uniquely collegial atmosphere while delivering the best thinking to clients.

TBG (The Berndt Group) and Gallagher have enjoyed a long relationship through multiple consulting projects. We are two great Baltimore institutions that work regionally and nationally—but that never lose sight of our values or our culture. When it came time to redesign their website and move to a new CMS, Gallagher turned to TBG, its trusted Web partner. TBG gave the site a fresh look-and-feel and implemented the site in the Sitecore CMS.

Focus on Engaging, Relatable Content & Imagery

Focus on Engaging, Relatable Content & Imagery

Background photos on the site depict recognizable locations around the Baltimore region, telegraphing to potential clients that Gallagher is committed to the local area and its citizens. Content and imagery focuses on Gallagher’s unusually collegial culture, allowing prospective clients and staff to easily imagine what it would be like to hire or work for Gallagher. In addition, TBG and Gallagher worked together to create original attorney photos and engaging bios and to highlight attorneys throughout the site to drive home the notion that Gallagher is made up of its people, rather than being a faceless monolithic firm. The result is messaging that solidifies Gallagher’s sophistication as a firm, its history and role in the Baltimore region, and the ability of prospective clients to relate to its attorneys.

Aligning Content with Organizational Goals

Aligning Content with Organizational Goals

The content aligns with Gallagher’s organizational goals, driving traffic to important but less prominent areas of the site, such as the Careers section, or a newly released case study.TBG redesigned Gallagher’s site navigation to be simple with logical subcategories, but to feature deeper content within large “mega menu” flyouts. These enable the user to see all content in a section without guessing, and they also allow Gallagher to highlight important content, such as the arrival of a new attorney, in an often-used area of the site.

Effective Content Reuse

Effective Content Reuse

Content reuse is a hallmark of Sitecore. Gallagher was able to create content in one place—a featured attorney bio, critical to positioning the firm—and have it show up in multiple places throughout the site without manual intervention. Another mission-critical feature of Sitecore is its workflow. Although Gallagher enjoys high stability, Sitecore allows it to plan, create, publish, and manage content in a sustainable way by implementing a custom workflow that can serve both its present and future needs—something incredibly difficult to do in a manual content publishing operation.

Multi-faceted Attorney Search

Multi-faceted Attorney Search

The old site didn’t make it easy for a prospective client (or opposing counsel!) to find an attorney. The challenge was to give users the ability to find an attorney, no matter how much information they already know. TBG developed a multi-faceted attorney search to allow users to search by name, by type of law practiced, by state bar admission, even by what law school the attorney attended.

The multi-faceted search means you can search by just about any piece of information in an attorney’s bio. Whether you’re a prospective client in need of a real estate attorney licensed to practice in Virginia, or you’re opposing counsel on a health law case, you can easily and quickly get to the attorney content you need. Even if you only know “I met an attorney whose name begins with W, but I don’t remember how to spell his name,” the attorney search works for you!

Enticing Great New Hires

Enticing Great New Hires

The old Gallagher site didn’t have much content aimed at an important audience: potential new staff attorneys. Gallagher’s reputation and body of work meant the firm always has a wealth of desirable and highly qualified candidates to choose from, but it wasn’t doing quite enough to sell itself as the fulfilling place to be an attorney that it is.

In addition to the other content that more implicitly imparts Gallagher’s values through its leadership, activities, and atmosphere, TBG recommended Gallagher develop content explicitly highlighting the benefits of working for Gallagher. Gallagher’s site deftly gives the candidate a well-rounded picture of working there, from the explicit “Benefits of Working for Gallagher” content, to the description of the summer associate program, to leadership and attorney bios and photos, to other content depicting the corporate values and culture. Candidates are much better able to imagine themselves working at Gallagher.

Strong, Memorable Design

Strong, Memorable Design

This project challenged TBG to create a strong look-and-feel that validated the firm as steeped in community involvement and focused on people while keeping it simple enough to inspire trust was a major design challenge. TBG recommended a strategy of using lush, striking, original photography of Baltimore locations, and of real people doing real work in Gallagher’s collegial environment.

We also proposed using Gallagher’s existing conservative color palette but adding smaller touches of vibrant, eye-catching colors used sparingly to direct users’ attention and to impart a sense of movement and modernity alongside the firm’s more traditional brand values of reliability and responsibility. The new look-and-feel signals Gallagher is a modern, sophisticated, professional law firm with deep community connections and a social conscience.
